Well, it is officially New Years Eve, it also happens to be my 31st birthday today! I’m not sure how it happened but alas, here we are! lol Continue reading

Silver Belles

Circa 1950's American actress Esther Williams with balloons at Christmas time.

With less than 2 days until Christmas, I’m sure you Dolls are stressed out with last-minute gift shopping and other holiday preparations. It’s hard to believe it’s really that time of year again! It feels like only yesterday it was summer (Man, I miss my flip-flops!) Continue reading

Snood, Glorious Snood!

Snoods are truly a wonderful little slice of vintage heaven! While they were most popular during the 1940’s circa WWII, these gems have been around for ages, (no seriously, since like the middle ages!). What exactly is a snood? It is defined as an ornamental hairnet or fabric bag worn over the hair at the back of a woman’s head. They come in a variety of colours and materials and can be used both casually and for more formal occasions. I have had a love affair with the snood for many years now and whenever I see one in a colour I don’t have, I snatch it up and add it to my collection! They are a lovely, affordable way to add vintage flourish to any look!  Continue reading

Grandma Libby’s Catalina Swimsuit in Country Living Magazine

Today was (sadly) the unofficial end of summer. What better way to give her one last hurrah than with a little vintage swimwear post!

Country Living Magazine is one of my faves and they often have vintage specific content that I just can’t get enough of. While recently going through some old issues, I spotted a very familiar swimsuit staring back at me from an article on collecting vintage bathing suits. Lo and behold, it was my grandmother Libby’s fabulous floral one-piece by Catalina! I always loved that picture of her standing with my great grandmother in the Coney Island surf. Continue reading

Local Haunts: The Hester Street Fair

There are lots of local markets on the weekend here in the city, but Hester Street Fair is one that is favored by many. This small patch of gated concrete inside of Seward Park attracts foodies, artisans and of course, vintage lovers! So, I decided to see what all the hub bub was about and took a stroll there this afternoon through the many tented booths chock full of good eats and secondhand treasures.  Continue reading

Girl About Town: The Lovely Aurora

I have been wanting to do a regular post about women on the streets of NYC for a while now. Every time I saw an outfit or a hairstyle that I wanted to photograph, I didn’t have my camera with me! Luckily, earlier this week I spotted the lovely Aurora while shopping on Clinton Street and I just happened to have my Nikon handy!  Continue reading

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow…

Hey there Guys and Dolls! I am cutting my locks in a couple of weeks and I am having a difficult time deciding what exactly I should do with it. It has never been this quite this long before (it is now down to my butt!) and I think it is time to let it go. That being said, deciding on a new style/length is way more trying than I had anticipated. I plan to donate 10-18 inches to charity and am willing to go super short. I’ve been pouring over various photos and magazines trying to find something I like. I have narrowed it down to a few choices I think will work for me. What do you guys think?

My current state of affairs, lol

The longest of the bunch, like the lovely Rita Hayworth?

Shorter and full-bodied, a la Jane Russel?

Just above the shoulder, like the stunning Liz Taylor?

Or a classic shoulder length page-boy, like the beautiful Gene Tierney?

Any other suggestions are welcome, thanks for your help 🙂

XOXO

Katy Keene: America’s Queen of Pin-Ups and Fashions

Exactly who is Katy Keene?

That’s what I wondered aloud to myself the first time I saw her comic books next to my usual Archie titles in the newsstand at LaGuardia Airport. I was 7 or 8 years old getting prepped for a family flight down to Florida. She reminded me of Veronica but much more flamboyant and fashionable. I asked my mom and she purchased the book for my in flight entertainment. Sure enough, by the time we landed in sunny Florida I had read that first digest cover to cover and I was hooked. This girl was awesome! Smart, beautiful, kind and spunky! Little did I know she had been around long before I discovered her in the 1980’s. Continue reading

Vintage Inspired Dresses: What to Wear to a Wedding for Under $100.00

Wedding season is upon us, gals and its time to do it up right! I’ve read so many articles lately about what to wear to this kind of wedding or that kind of wedding. While that’s all well and good, and there are certainly some guidelines that should be upheld when selecting proper wedding attire, I had yet to see any vintage style dresses assembled for the nuptial occasion! So, I did a little digging and hand selected some great pics for all of you ladies out there with a mailbox full of wedding invitations and nothing to wear! All of these dresses are under $100.00 and unlike that Pepto-Bismol pink bridesmaids dress you have shoved in the back of your closet, these frocks can be worn again and again.

Fleamarket Finds!

Picked up a couple of vintage goodies over the weekend while scouring the local markets.  Check out my mini haul below 😉Vintage 1950’s rhinestone dog brooch $3.00. I love figural brooches, especially animals. I saw his little green eyes and knew I had to adopt him!
