Retro Revival: Jessica Chastain vs. Sophia Loren

There is something so elegant and timeless about a black lace dress with a nude underlay. It is both sexy and ladylike at the same time. Today’s retro revival comes to you courtesy of Miss Sophia Loren and Miss Jessica Chastain, two lovely ladies clad in two very similar lacy frocks!

Jessica recently wore this amazing Oscar De La Renta Pre-Fall 2013 dress to the NYC premiere of the film “Mama”. While that movie looks way too scary for my taste, this stunning cocktail dress is absolutely my cup of tea! Paired with an extraordinary diamond collar by Harry Winston, she is pure vintage perfection! Such a classic retro look on a classically beautiful girl! 

Speaking of classically beautiful, I found this photo of screen siren Sophia Loren in an equally stunning black lace dress from the 1950’s. Sophia paired hers with a fabulous veiled hat and simple black heels. 

I personally adore both of these dresses, but I prefer the neckline of Jessica’s paired with the fuller flared a line skirt from Sophia’s. To me, that would be a perfect combination! As for the accessories  you can’t go wrong with Harry Winston or a magnificent veiled topper 😉

Film Noir Photoshoot!

On Christmas Eve, I stopped in to see my amazing friend and genius hairdresser Arsenia Barias at her salon, Altagracia Unisex. I decided I wanted to try something new for the upcoming year and after watching the film for “Water For Elephants” (one of my favorite books of all time), I was very inspired by Reese Witherspoon’s 1920’s/1930’s chic bob!

With less than 2 days until Christmas, I’m sure you Dolls are stressed out with last-minute gift shopping and other holiday preparations. It’s hard to believe it’s really that time of year again! It feels like only yesterday it was summer (Man, I miss my flip-flops!)

Paradise Found: The Manhattan Vintage Show!

Last Friday, I attended the Manhattan Vintage Show and I still feel like I am walking on cloud nine! It was my first time seeing it and from the minute I stepped inside, I felt as though I were home. I walked through what felt like endless rows of some of the finest treasures I’ve ever encountered with a sense of wonder and amazement. For me, it was like that first moment when Willy Wonka opened the doors to the chocolate room, lol! It was honestly a bit overwhelming. I didn’t know where to look first and my heart was pounding a mile a minute while my brain tried to process what I was seeing! It’s hard to put into words what it was like to visit such a place, I think it is something every true vintage lover should experience firsthand.

A few things come to mind when one thinks of Elizabeth Taylor; Her amazing collection of jewelry, her incomparable beauty, her 8 marriages, her role as Cleopatra, etc. But “catlady”? Er, not so much.  

Girl About Town: The Lovely Ashley

I first met Ashley at the MAC Hey Sailor event back in the spring when I was instantly drawn to her awesome retro updo. As fate would have it, I had the pleasure of running into her again at the 41st Annual East Village Block Fair a couple of weeks ago. It was funny because I didn’t even recognize her as the last time I saw her she was a redhead with glasses! Ashley is truly a little pinup chameleon and I just adored this darker rockabilly look.

Drugstore Delight of the Month: Wet N Wild’s Mega Last Matte Lipstick #967 Dollhouse Pink

Hey Dolls, I know it’s been a while since I posted a DDOTM feature ( I think I skipped a month!) so I will try to make this one as swell as possible 😉

I recently discovered a new shade of Wet n Wild’s Mega Last lipstick that really took me by surprise. While I have been a fan of this product for some time and have recommended it to y’all in previous postings ( i.e. Orange Pinup Lipstick), this colour is seriously impressive. For a cheapie lipstick, the colour intensity rivaled that of a high-end product. The consistency was wonderfully opaque and shockingly full-bodied and bold.  And the shade itself? This is a pink that one would encounter in Barbie’s dreamhouse! It’s the quintessential girly girl shade of bright pink. It’s very clear with blue undertones. 

My First Professional Vintage Photoshoot!

Last month, I had my very first official photoshoot with a professional photographer! My lovely friend and fabulous hairdresser Arsenia called me and told me she was looking to do a 1930′s style shoot for her book and I jumped at the chance to work with her! She created these gorgeous vintage finger waves to accent my own 1930’s lace dress. I finished off the ensemble by adding my vintage Salvatore Ferragamo t-strap shoes and some art deco rhinestone jewelry.

Snood, Glorious Snood!

Snoods are truly a wonderful little slice of vintage heaven! While they were most popular during the 1940’s circa WWII, these gems have been around for ages, (no seriously, since like the middle ages!). What exactly is a snood? It is defined as an ornamental hairnet or fabric bag worn over the hair at the back of a woman’s head. They come in a variety of colours and materials and can be used both casually and for more formal occasions. I have had a love affair with the snood for many years now and whenever I see one in a colour I don’t have, I snatch it up and add it to my collection! They are a lovely, affordable way to add vintage flourish to any look! 

L’Ensemble Du Jour: Black & White Delight

For my Labor Day attire, I decided to wear this darling 1960’s maxi dress as the weather had finally cooled down a bit. I just love the print on this one, it reminds me of a mod patchwork quilt! The ruffled side slit adds just a touch of whimsy.
