Retro Revival: Jessica Chastain vs. Sophia Loren

sophiajessica

There is something so elegant and timeless about a black lace dress with a nude underlay. It is both sexy and ladylike at the same time. Today’s retro revival comes to you courtesy of Miss Sophia Loren and Miss Jessica Chastain, two lovely ladies clad in two very similar lacy frocks!

Jessica recently wore this amazing Oscar De La Renta Pre-Fall 2013 dress to the NYC premiere of the film “Mama”. While that movie looks way too scary for my taste, this stunning cocktail dress is absolutely my cup of tea! Paired with an extraordinary diamond collar by Harry Winston, she is pure vintage perfection! Such a classic retro look on a classically beautiful girl!

Speaking of classically beautiful, I found this photo of screen siren Sophia Loren in an equally stunning black lace dress from the 1950’s. Sophia paired hers with a fabulous veiled hat and simple black heels.

I personally adore both of these dresses, but I prefer the neckline of Jessica’s paired with the fuller flared a line skirt from Sophia’s. To me, that would be a perfect combination! As for the accessories  you can’t go wrong with Harry Winston or a magnificent veiled topper 😉

Which look do you Dolls prefer? 1950’s Sophia or contemporary Jessica?

Until next time!

Retro Revival: Jessica Alba Vs. Grace Kelly

Designers are constantly influenced by styles of the past whether it be a silhouette, a pattern, a cut or a fabric. Whenever I really like a contemporary garment, it is almost always because it reminds me of something vintage. So, when I saw the lovely Jessica Alba in this Valentino Resort 2013 gown, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of deja vu!  Continue reading

All Hail The Chic! Jackie O, Fashionista Fatale!

In honor of election day, I thought I’d take a moment to shine the spotlight on our most glamorous first lady of all time, Miss Jackie Kennedy! Continue reading

NY Fashion Week Spring 2013: Best Vintage & Retro Looks!

Fashion Week came and went ever so quickly this September and there were a surprising amount of vintage inspired collections on the runways! While I am not much of a label hound (Seriously, who has that kind of money to burn?), I like seeing designers with a retro spirit and obvious appreciation for the classics. After going through what felt like a zillion photos from all of the shows, I managed to weed out the best vintage looks for Spring 2013! From 1930’s Art Deco evening wear to mid-century floral frocks, there’s a little something for everyone 😉 Continue reading

Just A Girl: Gwen Stefani, Fashionista Fatale!

When I was a teenager in the mid 90’s, there was this awesome music video channel called “The Box”. Unlike MTV, this network charged viewer’s to select a video that they wanted to see. Well, one fateful day in 1995, someone had requested No Doubt’s debut video “Just A Girl” about 25 times in a row. I was completely transfixed on the television. While the song was amazing (and still gives me goosebumps to this day), there was something about that energetic blonde with the pinup perfect hair and unique sense of style that I just could not get enough of. From that moment on, I had become a die-hard “Gwenabee”! Continue reading

Mila Kunis Goes Retro: Miss Dior Fall 2012 Ad Campaign

Following in her “Black Swan” co-star Natalie Portman’s footsteps, Mila Kunis is now the new face of Miss Dior. While her Spring 2012 campaign was beautiful, she really knocked it out of the park with this surprisingly retro look for fall.

I’ve loved her ever since I saw her for the first time on “That 70’s Show”, (one of my guilty pleasures).  While her character Jackie Burkhart was a spoiled, bossy and often times mean-spirited teen, she has since showcased her acting versatility in major motion pictures like “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and  “Friends With Benefits”. Not to mention being the voice of Meg Griffin on Family Guy!

These amazing black and white  photographs, taken by Mario Sorrenti, depict Ms. Kunis as a glamorous 1950’s starlet being hounded by photographers. She looks oh so chic in her jeweled sweater, pencil skirt and of course her classic crocodile chain link handbag!

Just gorgeous! Mila, you are pin up perfection 😉

L’Ensemble Du Jour: Mod Squad

Every now and then while thrifting or digging through a pile of clothes at a local fleamarket, you will find a truly unexpected gem. For me, it happened over memorial day weekend when it was super hot and humid and I was just about to leave. I happened to spy this beautiful sweater dress sticking out from underneath a bunch of random clothing. Immediately intrigued, I pulled her out from the abyss to have a closer look. I asked the price, 3 whole dollars, and upon viewing the label, I knew I had just made a super score. It was a Milly dress! Milly is one of my favorite brands because not only do her designs eloquently mimic lust-worthy vintage looks but the quality and cut of her garments are superb.  Continue reading

L’Ensemble Du Jour: Betsey in Black

Last week I was looking through my closet and found this little black Betsey  Johnson dress. I bought it at a thrift shop a few weeks back and decided that today was the day to bring her out into the world. Sometimes, you’ll have a fancy dress laying around collecting dust for years waiting for the proper occasion to be debuted. In true Betsey fashion, I decided to wear this dress and hat just because! Some days you just want to feel pretty, and what better way to get there than by wearing a full skirted lace dress with an elegant feathered hat!  I met a lot of wonderful people that day while walking around the city, but had I opted to wear something less extravagant, I may not have had the opportunity.

Prada Minimal Baroque Sunglasses…or are they?

While thrifting earlier this week, a pair of sunglasses managed to catch my eye from clear across the shop. They were big, bright and bold as well as somewhat familiar looking. That was when I spun through my fashion memory bank and realized that they bore a striking resemblance to Prada’s Minimal Baroque Sunglasses! I loved the curve of these shades and the black and white combo feels so fresh and summery. After trying them on in a nearby mirror, I knew I had to have them. The $8.95 price tag made this designer inspired find all the more sweet!

Today I wore these bad-boys with a vintage gingham plaid dress (thrifted), my favorite patent leather Clarks sandals and my vintage white wicker handbag. Topped of with vintage milk-glass screwbacks and a rhinestone cat brooch, the ensemble was complete! Looking forward to wearing these all season long!

MET Gala 2012: The Golden Girls

Ah, the annual Costume Institute Gala at NYC’s Metropolitan Museum of Art! That last taste of couture after the awards season comes to a close. There’s nothing like it!

In addition to being one of my favorite places in the world, one night a year celebrities flock in droves to strut their stuff on the red carpet in honor of the art of fashion.  Continue reading
